The Forgotten World of Zdeněk Burian (Zapomenutý svět Zdeňka Buriana)

The renown Czech artist Zdeněk Burian is best known internationally for his paintings of dinosaurs, extinct mammals and prehistoric man but his illustration work is only known in the Czech Republic.

Burian said that his favorite authors to illustrate were James Fenimore Cooper, Jack London and Jules Verne but this book includes illustrations from books between 1928 and 1967 by Zane Grey, Edgar Wallace, William West Winter, Arthur Stringer, James Oliver Corwood aand Frances Hodgson Burnett as well as many European authors.

This massive 9 1/2” x 13”, 508 page art book reproduces from the original art the illustrations Burian made for these books. This includes colored covers and the gouache and pen & ink interiors.

Published in 2020, the book is out of print from the Czech publisher (the text of the book is in Czech so most of you will be buying this only for the art) but we were able to get a limited number of copies.

Titled The Forgotten World of Zdeněk Burian because it includes his lesser known works and includes unpublished sets of illustrations, western covers and costume designs for the first Czechoslovak color film as well as designs for an opera, which was never produced,

It also reproduces in 89 pages the covers of the 1,070 books for which Burian illustrated the covers and/or did interior art.

This item has a shipping surcharge of $6.

The Czech publisher has informed us that the book is now out of print, so when we run out of the copies we have we will be unable to acquire any more.
