Wonderful World of Zdeněk Burian (Jules Verne illustrations) (Podivuhodný svět Zdeňka Buriana)
There is a youtube video that will give you a further idea of the scope of the book:
The renown Czech artist Zdeněk Burian is best known internationally for his paintings of dinosaurs, extinct mammals and prehistoric man but his illustration work is only known in the Czech Republic.
Burian said that his favorite authors to illustrate were James Fenimore Cooper, Jack London and Jules Verne, with Verne topping the list. Burian traveled little beyond Czechoslovakia and Verne gave him the opportunity to illustrate people, cultures and lands all around the world. From 1928-1965 Burian created over 400 illustrations for 35 books by Jules Verne published only in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech republic) and includes additional illustrations done for different editions.
This massive 9 1/2” x 13”, 472 page art book reproduces from the original art the illustrations Burian made for these books. This includes colored covers and the gouache and pen & ink interiors.
Published in 2018, the text of the book is in Czech so most of you will be buying this only for the art. If the cover illustration of the giant squid attacking the crew of Captain Nemo’s ship the Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea does not make you want to see more then this book is not for you. We were able to get a limited number of copies from a Czech book distributor.
