The renown Czech artist Zdeněk Burian is best known internationally for his paintings of dinosaurs, extinct mammals and prehistoric man but his illustration work is only known in the Czech Republic.
This massive (9 1/2” x 13”, 414 page, 6 pounds 7 ounces) art book reproduces, from the original art, mostly complete sets of illustrations for books published by various Cxech publishers in the years 1921-1947.
Published in 2016, the book is out of print from the Czech publisher (the text of the book is in Czech so most of you will be buying this only for the art) but we were able to get a limited number of copies from a Czech book distributor.

Wonderful World of Zdeněk Burian (Jules Verne illustrations) (Podivuhodný svět Zdeňka Buriana)
The renown Czech artist Zdeněk Burian is best known internationally for his paintings of dinosaurs, extinct mammals and prehistoric man but his illustration work is only known in the Czech Republic.
Burian said that his favorite authors to illustrate were James Fenimore Cooper, Jack London and Jules Verne, with Verne topping the list. Burian traveled little beyond Czechoslovakia and Verne gave him the opportunity to illustrate people, cultures and lands all around the world. From 1928-1965 Burian created over 400 illustrations for 35 books by Jules Verne published only in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech republic) and includes additional illustrations done for different editions.
This massive 9 1/2” x 13”, 472 page book reproduces from the original art the illustrations Burian made for these books. This includes colored covers and the gouache and pen & ink interiors.
Published in 2018, the text of the book is in Czech so most of you will be buying this only for the art. If the cover illustration of the giant squid attacking the crew of Captain Nemo’s ship the Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea does not make you want to see more then this book is not for you. We were able to get a limited number of copies from a Czech book distributor.

The renown Czech artist Zdeněk Burian is best known internationally for his paintings of dinosaurs, extinct mammals and prehistoric man but his illustration work is only known in the Czech Republic.
Burian said that his favorite authors to illustrate were James Fenimore Cooper, Jack London and Jules Verne but this book includes illustrations from books between 1928 and 1967 by Zane Grey, Edgar Wallace, William West Winter, Arthur Stringer, James Oliver Corwood aand Frances Hodgson Burnett as well as many European authors.

Titled The Forgotten World of Zdeněk Burian because it includes his lesser known works and includes unpublished sets of illustrations, western covers and costume designs for the first Czechoslovak color film as well as designs for an opera, which was never produced,
It also reproduces in 89 pages the covers of the 1,070 books for which Burian illustrated the covers and/or did interior art.

The Prehistoric World of Zdeněk Burian Book 1 & 2
The renown Czech artist Zdeněk Burian is best known internationally for his paintings of dinosaurs, extinct mammals and prehistoric man. Over the last few years we have made available books showcasing his illustration art and now can announce the availability of a new book showcasing the prehistoric art for which he is so well known.
This first book, of a projected series of three, contains a total of 412 paintings, illustrations, and .sketches, of which 344 were reproduced from the original art. The remainder were scanned from high-quality negatives, slides, or xerocopies while only a few, labeled in the book as “original unavailable” (originál nedostupný), are photographed from the original publications. Included are previously unpublished sketches and notes. This volume is a massive 578 pages, 9 1/2” x 13” in size and weighs almost 8 pounds!
